A Three-Part Professional Development Series:  When state content standards, classroom content and assignments, and assessments are aligned and teachers teach grade-level work every day, student achievement will improve.  Our Three-Part Professional Development Series is aimed at giving teachers and administrators important strategies to attain this alignment and implement a coherent standards-aligned instructional program.

Training is available for secondary or elementary school teams or individual districts, schools, or departments.  Teachers and administrators may participate in one, two, or all three parts of the SAIL series.

The SAIL series includes:

  1. Curriculum Calibration
    • Examination of the depth, breadth, and rigor of the content standards across the grade levels.
    • Practical strategies and tools to align both teacher and publisher-created curricula to grade level standards to raise expectations and improve student achievement.
  2. Assessment
    • Use of grade-level formative and summative assessments to improve student achievement.
    • Application of research-based strategies to create effective assessments.
  3. Explicit Direct Instruction
    • Application of effective instructional strategies and efficient, well-designed lessons to ensure student mastery of the standards taught.

School-to-Career (STC) Program

Coordinator, Resiliency & Prevention Programs, Louise Barbee
925.942.3385

School-to-Career is a K-18 school reform initiative that promotes changes at the classroom system levels. In the classroom, teachers use project-based learning, service-learning and other instructional strategies that engage students, require in-depth investigations, have a "real world" audience, bring relevance to the curriculum, and develop necessary skills that students will need for the future.

Learning is both rigorous and relevant. School-to-Career also encourages students to engage in work-based learning opportunities, such as job shadows, internships, work site visits, career speakers and other opportunities that connect the knowledge and skills students are learning in the classroom with those they will need to be successful in college and careers. The Contra Costa Office of Education provides technical assistance to school districts to develop and implement effective School-to-Career programs.
