It's a simple idea:
Match first, second, and third grade students with adult business volunteers who can give them one-on-one attention as they practice the reading skills they are learning in the classroom. That’s Project READ.

Project READ was established in 1994 and annually matches more than 200 students in classrooms in the John Swett, Martinez, Mt. Diablo, Pittsburg, and the San Ramon Valley School Districts with caring business volunteers who make a significant impact in their lives.

"I am astounded at what joy I get from reading with the kids, praising their strengths and shoring up their areas of weakness . . . this whole experience has really opened my eyes to how desperately kids need adults to make reading fun for them."
