Assessment Each student entering the program spends three days in the Assessment Center. There, a comprehensive diagnosis of academic skills, career interests and learning styles is completed. Significant behavioral issued are also identified, and students are oriented to the facility, its operation, and program expectations. School / Probation orientation is also provided during this assessment class. In order to ensure a more successful transition to the main program, students are expected to remain in this class until all assessments have been completed, and appropriate behaviors have been consistently demonstrated. All students
leave the Assessment Center with an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP). Students housed in the Monticello or Tamalpais Units study in a classroom within the living unit. Girls attend a separate class, with curriculum targeted to their special needs. Students who have a history of substance abuse are assigned to the Adolescent Counseling Education (ACE) class. Older boys who qualify are assigned to the School-to-Career class, which emphasizes high school completion, GED preparation, and employability skills. Additionally, Mt. McKinley School operates two placement programs, which are part of a collaborative with Probation and Mental Health. The Summit Center is a nine-month residential treatment program for formerly incarcerated adolescent boys. The Chris Adams Girls Center is a similar program for adolescent girls. Therapy is an integral component in both of these programs for the student and his / her family. Transitional services are provided for one year when students return to the community.
