From Tents to Tweets: Lessons Learned from Responding to Occupy Oakland Demonstrations

Oakland communicators Karen Boyd, Citywide Communications Director, and Sgt. Chris Bolton, Chief of Staff to Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan, offer an inside view into the challenges they faced, opportunities seized, and lessons learned responding to unprecedented and ongoing demonstrations related to Occupy Oakland.

About the speakers:
Karen Boyd is a seasoned communicator with more than 20 years experience directing strategic communications programs for public agencies, including city and county governments and federal agencies. She is currently the Citywide Communications Director for the City of Oakland. Her 16-year tenure at the City of Oakland includes serving as the Communications Director for the City Attorney's Office and the Public Information Officer for the Public Works Agency. Prior to her career at the City of Oakland, Karen spent 11 years as an environmental consultant working on community relations related to water quality and hazardous waste cleanup projects.
Sergeant Chris Bolton joined the ranks of the Oakland Police Department in 1999. He has worked a variety of assignments: patrol, field training officer, academy instructor, and internal affairs. He is currently the Chief of Staff to Chief Howard Jordan where his responsibilities include supervision of the Department's Media Relations Unit.
