FOSTER
YOUTH SERVICES (FYS)
Youth Development Services has convened a county-wide group of
foster youth advocates and professionals to plan for the unique
needs of foster children in school in Contra Costa County. Utilizing
a unique partnership, Office of Education Liaisons, located in
Children and Family Services field offices in Richmond and Antioch,
facilitate the prompt school enrollment of foster youth by tracking
school records and assisting foster parents with the school enrollment
process. Tutoring is provided to improve educational outcomes
for foster youth living in group home placements.
HOME
INSTRUCTION PROGRAM FOR PRE-SCHOOL YOUNGSTERS (HIPPY)
The Home Instruction program for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) is
a bilingual, early intervention, parent-focused program aimed at
supporting parents in their efforts to provide educational enrichment
for their preschool children. Funded by the State of California
Department of Education, the goal is to empower parents as their
childrens first and most influential teachers. The targeted
population is parents of three to five year old children who have
had limited access to formal education.
Parents
are trained to use the curriculum through weekly visits with paraprofessionals
who are also parents in the program. Every other week, the paraprofessionals
role-play the activities with parents in the home. On alternate
weeks, all of the parents and paraprofessionals meet at the HIPPY
site to role-play the activities as a large group.
The HIPPY
Program staff receives training and technical assistance from the
HIPPY State Office and HIPPY USA, the national affiliation.
